Why in News?
The Delhi government has approved ₹100 crore for the deployment of 1,000 truck-mounted anti-smog guns across the city during the winter pollution season. The machines will operate on designated PWD roads from September to June every year between 2026 and 2029. The plan has been submitted to the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM).
Existing Anti-Smog Measures
- The Delhi PWD already operates around 200 anti-smog guns on its roads.
- It also has around 350 mist poles installed at locations with high vehicular movement and dust pollution.
- The new fleet will expand the existing system, with the main focus on dust suppression on designated PWD roads.
How Do Anti-Smog Guns Work?
- Anti-smog guns spray water in the form of a fine mist into the surrounding air.
- The water droplets help settle dust particles, particularly road dust, on the ground. The measure is therefore mainly aimed at dust suppression, rather than directly removing all types of air pollutants.
