OVERVIEW

Overview

The CAPF AC stands for Central Armed Police Forces (Assistant Commandant), which is annually conducted by UPSC and is a collective term for India's paramilitary forces. It includes forces such as BSF (Border Security Force), CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force), CISF (Central Industrial Security Force), ITBP (Indo-Tibetan Border Police) and SSB (Sashastra Seema Bal). In addition to these forces the Assam Rifles (AR) and the National Security Guard (NSG) also function in paramilitary roles, taking the total to 7 security forces under the paramilitary umbrella in India.

The selection process involves 3 stages — a written examination (Paper 1 and Paper 2), a physical/medical examination and finally a personal interview. Paper 1 is a multiple-choice questions type examination, whereas Paper 2 is a subjective questions type examination. Paper 1 covers General Ability and Intelligence (which includes General Studies, Mathematics and Static GK). Paper 2 covers General Studies, Essay and Comprehension. The two-paper written examination totals 450 marks, whereas the Personal Interview is 150 marks, taking a total of 600 marks based on which candidates are graded.

Both papers are conducted on the same day — Paper 1 from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM and Paper 2 from 2:00 PM – 5:00 PM. The physical examination includes 100m race, 800m race, Long Jump and Shot Put.

Preparing for UPSC CAPF AC requires a smart study methodology which combines dedication with a structured learning syllabus, aiming at improving the chances to qualify for the UPSC CAPF AC examination.

Good to know. Both written papers are held on the same day. Paper 2 is evaluated only for candidates who clear Paper 1. From day one of joining, you are commissioned as a Gazetted Officer (Grade A) under the Ministry of Home Affairs.

The table below highlights the detailed exam pattern for both the written papers, which outline a detailed structure and roadmap for effective preparation.

PREPARATION JOURNEY

Preparation Journey

Cracking the CAPF AC exam demands consistency and perseverance — candidates have to prepare both mentally and physically. The sections below help you prepare better and brief candidates on how to stay consistent throughout this journey.

Phase 1 · Pre-exam preparation

This journey begins with understanding the entire selection process in CAPF — how many subjects are involved and what medical / physical tests you need to be prepared for. The CAPF AC exam has two written examinations in stage 1: Paper 1 (objective) covering General Ability and Intelligence, and Paper 2 (subjective) covering General Studies, Essay, Précis writing and Comprehension. Stage 2 involves a medical / physical fitness test, and the final stage is a personal interview where leadership abilities are tested.

Phase 2 · Exam execution

In this phase a candidate's focus should only revolve around how to improve the score by applying the knowledge gained during prep — which helps improve accuracy. This is also the phase where candidates have to simultaneously focus on the physical activities tested during the physical / medical test of the CAPF AC examination.

Phase 3 · Post-exam (Medical + Interview)

Once the written examination phase is over, candidates should focus more on prepping for the physical / medical test — consistently work on activities like sprints, shot put, long jump, and enhance speaking skills by watching mock personal interviews so you build a prior sense of how questions can be put during the interview. For candidates who did not clear the written phase, opt for smart work rather than hard work — study your weak topics, revise strong ones and stay motivated.

MOCK TESTS

Mock Tests

CAPF AC examination is a highly competitive examination where both the mental and physical abilities of a candidate are tested — during this rigorous journey we often tend to ignore the impact a full-length mock test plays. Candidates need to understand that learning topics is only one aspect of preparing for the written examination; without timed practice there is no way to feel the pressure of the real exam.

Once a candidate starts attempting full-length mock tests on a regular basis they understand where they lack the most and get a glimpse of the pressure that builds during the real examination, preparing them mentally to stay focused during the exam and to avoid losing any unnecessary marks. Mocks should be attempted on a regular basis — consistency helps improve accuracy. Attempting a daily current affairs quiz also helps improve your Paper 2 score as it revolves around précis writing on the latest geo-political situations.

Thus, attempting mock tests on a regular basis boosts your score and helps in identifying strong and weak topics, letting you prepare better for the examination and giving you an extra edge over other candidates.

PREVIOUS YEAR PAPERS

Previous Year Papers

During the pre-exam phase, candidates often tend to ignore the importance Previous Year Questions play in helping them understand the exam pattern in detail. Basically, if a candidate analyses the previous year questions, they get a blueprint of the paper and the type of questions that appear more often.

Attempting and analysing PYQs of the last 10 years will help in understanding the exam pattern and the topics based on which the maximum number of questions are asked. To fully maximise the benefit, a candidate should first attempt topic-level questions and then proceed to subject-level previous year questions. The goal is not to merely download the previous year papers — attempt them in test format which mimics a real-life exam scenario, helping gain more accuracy and pressure-handling abilities.

Analysing the time limits of the physical and medical test will also play an important role in cracking that stage.

Digital Benchers offers candidates the ability to practise previous year questions in a test-series format with detailed subject- and topic-level analysis of the questions, helping candidates improve their efficiency, score and accuracy.

PREPARATION STRATEGY

Preparation Strategy

01Analyse last 10 years' papers
02Concept videos (recorded)
03Notes + reading material
04Practice + mocks
05Physical / PET training

CAPF AC examination is highly competitive — to crack it in one go a candidate should follow a smart study approach.

Written examination (Paper 1 and Paper 2) blueprint: First analyse the last 10 years' papers to understand the exam pattern based on which you can build the blueprint of the exam paper. Once you've identified the type of questions most often asked from each topic, study that topic through conceptual videos (preferably recorded — saves time and gives flexibility to study at your own pace) so the concept becomes clear. Then read physical notes or PDFs to ensure nothing important is missed. After that, practise questions (both previous year and topic-wise) so all different levels and types of questions for that topic are covered. Repeat this loop until all topics are covered.

Also make a habit of reading newspapers and blogs related to defence activities and exercises to stay updated on the latest news. Paper 1 and 2 focus mainly on three subjects: General Studies, General English and Mathematics. Pointers for different candidates:

· College Student (Full-Time Prep): 2 hours each on the three subjects + 30 minutes for Daily Current Affairs.

· Working Professional (limited time): 1.5 hours each on the three subjects + 30 minutes for Daily Current Affairs.

With dedicated daily study, college students can complete preparation in 3–4 months, working professionals in 4–5 months.

Now comes the tough part — giving mocks regularly and finding your weak topics. Attempt at least one mock test per day so you feel the mental pressure of being in a real exam; this helps the accuracy level improve consistently. Mock scores often mimic real-life scores, so take them seriously.

Physical / Medical Test: Focus on the core activities mentioned in the syllabus combined with stamina building — this plays a crucial role in clearing stage 2. Practise these exercises daily; with each day passing, candidates become better and stronger at completing these activities within the specified timeline.

Follow these guidelines, define your routine, and stay consistent — that is the single ingredient that will help you succeed in fewer attempts.

CUTOFF

Cutoff

Cut-off is referred to as the safe score based on which a candidate is often deemed selected in the CAPF AC examination. To get selected, a candidate first has to clear both the written examination papers (Paper 1 + Paper 2 = 450 marks). To clear this stage, score 10–20 marks above the previous year's cut-off to stay on the safer side. Based on recent trends, if a candidate scores 320–325 out of 450 marks they advance to the next stage (medical / physical test), and once that's cleared, they have to clear the Personal Interview Test where a candidate is graded out of 150 marks — recent trends suggest a safe score of 80–90 marks at this stage.

Candidates should note that higher marks improve chances of selection, improve ranks, and the "safe score" is merely an indication of typical scoring ranges based on previous patterns. CAPF AC is highly competitive but can be cleared with a smart study approach.

Pro tip. Target 10–20 marks above the previous year's cut-off in the written exam — that's the comfortable buffer. For the Personal Interview, aim for 90+ out of 150 to secure a strong overall merit position.
