Why in News?
Indian and French space companies announce key agreements at the International Space Summit in Paris on 10 September 2026. The agreements cover satellite launches, space surveillance and microsatellite technology, further expanding the five-decade-old India-France space partnership into private-sector cooperation.
Key Highlights
- Safran Space and Dhruva Space signed contracts worth more than €5 million.
- The partnership will provide communication systems, inertial navigation units, optical payloads and ground stations for India's planned SBS-III space-surveillance constellation.
- The SBS-III constellation is expected to deploy 52 satellites between 2027 and 2030.
- RIDE!, a French launch-services company, signed an agreement to launch two satellites for TakeMeToSpace, an Indian company working on orbital data centres.
- U-Space, a French space company, and Indian firm AXISCADES signed a commercial cooperation agreement to explore India's microsatellite market.
- The U-Space–AXISCADES partnership will follow a phased roadmap under the Make in India initiative.
India-France Space Cooperation
- India and France have developed a strong space partnership over more than five decades, mainly through ISRO and France's space agency CNES.
- Their cooperation covers areas such as Earth observation, space geodesy, human spaceflight, launch-vehicle technologies, planetary exploration, maritime domain awareness and space situational awareness.
- The two countries also established a Strategic Space Dialogue covering civil and defence space cooperation. Its first meeting was held in Paris in June 2023, followed by the second meeting in New Delhi in March 2024.
