Why in News?
IIT Ropar has signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with the Army Air Defence College (AADC), Gopalpur, to offer MTech degrees in Defence Technology to Indian Army officers. The agreement was signed by Prof. Rajeev Ahuja, Director, IIT Ropar, and Lt Gen Amit Rao, Commandant, Army Air Defence College, Gopalpur.
Key Highlights
- Army officers undergoing the Long Air Defence Course will be able to receive formal academic accreditation through an MTech programme in Defence Technology at IIT Ropar.
- IIT Ropar faculty members will act as mentors and guide the officers in their dissertations and research projects.
- The officers will get access to IIT Ropar's laboratories and infrastructure, subject to prior approval.
- IIT Ropar faculty will conduct seminars and lectures in both online and offline modes.
- Both institutions will work together to develop technological knowledge in areas of mutual interest.
- The initiative will strengthen the technical education, research and professional development of Army officers.
Background
- The agreement builds on an earlier MoU for Academic and Research Cooperation signed between Army Training Command, Integrated Headquarters of the Ministry of Defence (Army), and IIT Ropar in December 2022.
- Since then, IIT Ropar has been working closely with the Indian Army on academic and research cooperation. The institute's Defence Research and Innovation Foundation has also played an important role in strengthening this partnership.
Significance
- The collaboration brings together military training and technical education, giving Army officers an opportunity to pursue advanced studies and research in defence technology.
- It will also encourage greater cooperation between academic institutions and the armed forces, particularly in developing technological capabilities for India's defence needs.
