- World Tourism Day 2025 was observed globally on 27 September with the theme “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation.”
- Established in 1980 by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the day commemorates the adoption of UNWTO statutes and promotes tourism’s role in economic growth, cultural exchange, and international cooperation.
- The 2025 theme focuses on aligning tourism with SDGs, reducing carbon emissions, conserving biodiversity, empowering women, youth, and indigenous communities, and strengthening community-driven enterprises.
- Tourism, which contributes 10% of global GDP, is being positioned as a tool for peace-building, resilience, and sustainability amid global challenges like climate change and migration.
- UNWTO urged investment in eco-friendly infrastructure, low-emission transport, responsible wildlife tourism, and training workers in green hospitality to advance sustainable tourism practices worldwide.
