Why in News?
A state-of-the-art virtual museum dedicated to Sri Aurobindo was unveiled on 4 September 2026 at Bharat Nivas in Auroville, Puducherry. The museum was developed jointly by the Auroville Foundation, Government of Puducherry and Union Ministry of Culture, with the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) carrying out the project.
The initiative is part of the programmes marking Sri Aurobindo’s 150th birth anniversary.
About the Virtual Museum
The museum uses digital technology to present Sri Aurobindo’s life, philosophy, literature and teachings in an interactive way.
Its major features include:
- Digital touchpoints and interactive learning interfaces for visitors.
- Content on Sri Aurobindo’s life, works and Integral Yoga.
- An olfactory installation featuring the aromas of 12 spiritually significant flowers associated with the teachings of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother.
- A narrative and curatorial approach designed to reflect the spiritual teachings of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother.
- The museum is planned as an educational, cultural and spiritual space for visitors, researchers and tourists.
Sri Aurobindo and Auroville
- Sri Aurobindo (1872–1950) was a philosopher, poet, yogi and nationalist who played an important role in India’s freedom movement.
- His spiritual philosophy later became closely associated with Integral Yoga, which focuses on the transformation and development of the whole human being.
- Auroville was founded in 1968 by The Mother (Mirra Alfassa), as an international township giving practical shape to Sri Aurobindo's vision of human unity.
- The Auroville Foundation was established under the Auroville Foundation Act, 1988 to administer and develop Auroville.
