Why in News?

The V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority (VOC Port) in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, has become India’s first major port to achieve Scope-2 Emission-Free status on 10 August 2026.

  • First Major Port: India’s first major port to achieve Scope-2 Emission-Free status.
  • Energy Certification: First Indian port to receive ISO 50001:2018 certification for its Energy Management System.
  • Renewable Energy: 93.89% of its electricity consumption was met through renewable energy in 2025–26.
  • Future Plans: Additional solar and wind capacity, battery storage and a Green Hydrogen Hub are planned.
