Why in News?
Three Sanchar Mitras from India have been selected as Generation Connect Youth Envoys (GCYE) of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) for the 2026–2030 period. The selection recognises the contribution of Indian youth to digital initiatives and their growing role in discussions on technology and digital development.
About the Selection
- Ankit Kumar Pal from Delhi, Manish Kumar Mandal from Bengaluru and Susmita Sain from Guwahati have been selected for the third cohort of ITU Generation Connect Youth Envoys.
- The selection was facilitated by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) from among Sanchar Mitras.
- The Generation Connect Youth Envoys programme provides young people with opportunities to participate in national, regional and global discussions related to ICTs, digital transformation and inclusive digital development.
- The programme also gives selected youth an opportunity to contribute to international initiatives related to technology, connectivity and digital inclusion.
About Sanchar Mitra Scheme
- The Sanchar Mitra Scheme aims to involve young people in digital empowerment and telecom awareness. Sanchar Mitras conduct awareness activities in communities, educational institutions and public places on issues such as citizen-centric telecom services, prevention of telecom fraud, mobile security and responsible use of telecom services.
- The scheme is open to students from technical institutions offering programmes in telecommunications, electronics, computers, cybersecurity and related fields.
- The scheme has been implemented across all States and Union Territories through the LSA field offices of the Department of Telecommunications. More than 200 institutions are currently participating in the scheme.
