Why in News?
The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has announced the recipients of the Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Awards (TNNAA) 2024. Four achievers have been selected for their outstanding contributions to adventure activities.
The awards will be presented by President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan along with the National Sports Awards 2025. The date of the ceremony will be announced separately.
Four Awardees
The 2024 awardees are:
- Baljeet Kaur – Land Adventure
- Skalzang Rigzin – Land Adventure
- Rimo Saha – Water Adventure
- Shiv Prasad Chamoli – Lifetime Achievement
The awardees were selected on the recommendations of the National Selection Committee, which examined the nominations and conducted the required scrutiny.
About Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Awards
The Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Awards are the highest national recognition for outstanding achievement in adventure activities.
The awards aim to encourage qualities such as:
- Courage and determination
- Physical and mental endurance
- Discipline and teamwork
- Risk-taking ability
- Quick and effective decision-making in challenging situations
Award Components
- A bronze statuette
- A certificate
- A blazer with a silken tie or saree
- ₹15 lakh prize money
The Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award has a status equivalent to the Arjuna Award and is presented by the Government of India alongside the National Sports Awards.
Why is it Named After Tenzing Norgay?
- The award is named after Tenzing Norgay, the legendary mountaineer who, along with Sir Edmund Hillary, became the first confirmed climbers to reach the summit of Mount Everest in 1953.
- His achievement is regarded as a landmark in the history of mountaineering and continues to symbolise courage, determination and human endurance.
