• An Indian Air Force Tejas Light Combat Aircraft crashed during an aerial display at the Dubai Air Show, killing the pilot and marking only the second crash in the fighter’s 24-year history. The tragedy, witnessed by thousands at one of the world’s biggest aviation events, has once again drawn attention to Tejas’ safety record, operational capabilities and long development journey.

• The crash occurred at around 2:15 pm local time while the LCA was performing low-altitude aerobatic manoeuvres. Eyewitness footage showed the aircraft suddenly nosediving before exploding on impact. Emergency responders reached the spot immediately, but the pilot could not be saved. The Indian Air Force has ordered a court of inquiry to determine the cause of the accident.

• Initial observations indicate that the jet could not recover from a negative G-force turn. Though the manoeuvre is part of Tejas’ certified aerobatic performance, precision and recovery timing are crucial. Negative G causes a weightless state during downward acceleration, affecting blood flow and potentially delaying pilot response. Experts maintain that Tejas is capable of executing such manoeuvres, but display routines demand extremely fine control margins.

• The only other Tejas crash occurred in March 2024 during a training sortie near Jaisalmer, when the jet went down shortly after take-off. The pilot survived after successfully ejecting using the zero-zero ejection seat system, and a subsequent court of inquiry reaffirmed the fighter’s strong safety and performance history built over decades of trials and operational deployment.
• तेजस का पहला और इससे पूर्व का हादसा मार्च 2024 में जैसलमेर के पास प्रशिक्षण उड़ान के दौरान हुआ था, जब विमान उड़ान भरने के कुछ समय बाद ही दुर्घटनाग्रस्त हो गया। उस समय पायलट ने जीरो-जीरो इजेक्शन सीट सिस्टम का उपयोग करके सुरक्षित रूप से बाहर निकलकर जान बचाई थी। जांच के बाद अधिकारियों ने तेजस के दशकों के परीक्षण और संचालन पर आधारित मजबूत सुरक्षा रिकॉर्ड की पुष्टि की थी।
