Why in news?
India and China have resumed trading with each other through Shipki La. They are using the Chhuppan Trade Mart at Namgya village. This trade was stopped for six years since 2020.
About Shipki La
- Shipki La is a 3,930 metres high mountain pass which connects the Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh with the Tibet Autonomous Region of China.
- It is on National Highway 5.
- Historically called Pema La or the Shared Pass. It was part of the Silk Route.
- After a conflict in 1962 Shipki La became part of the Line of Actual Control.
- The Sutlej river comes into India through Shipki La. In Tibet people call this river the Langqen Zangbo.
- Shipki La is one of the three routes where India and China trade with each other. The other two routes are Nathu La in Sikkim and Lipulekh in Uttarakhand.
