• India’s semiconductor sector witnessed a significant milestone with the inauguration of Semicon India 2025 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 2nd September at Yashobhoomi, New Delhi.
• The three-day event, held from 2nd to 4th September, is hosting more than 20,750 participants, including 2,500 delegates from 48 countries, to deliberate on India’s growing role in global semiconductor design and manufacturing.
• The event aims to catalyse a robust and sustainable semiconductor ecosystem in the country.
• Key themes include semiconductor fabrication plants (fabs), advanced packaging, smart manufacturing, artificial intelligence, research and development, and investment opportunities.
• Special focus is being given to state-level policy implementation and international cooperation to strengthen India’s semiconductor industry.
• Prime Minister Modi inaugurated the conference and is scheduled to participate in the CEOs roundtable on 3rd September.
• His vision is to establish India as a global hub for semiconductor design, manufacturing, and technology development.
• The event marks the ‘Perform’ phase of India’s semiconductor journey, following the earlier ‘Reform’ and ‘Transform’ phases.
• This stage emphasises scaling up and implementation of projects across the country.
• Several key projects are currently underway. Four new semiconductor facilities were recently sanctioned, focusing on packaging, silicon carbide, discrete semiconductors, and 3D glass technology.
• The Micron facility, approved in 2023, is nearing completion. Major fabrication plants are being developed in Gujarat’s Dholera and Sanand, along with Assam’s Jagi Road.
• To support these initiatives, dedicated workforce training and logistics infrastructure are also being strengthened.
