Why in News?
The Government informed Parliament about the 'Seafarer-First' initiative, launched to ensure the safety, security and welfare of Indian seafarers amid the security situation in Iran, the Strait of Hormuz and the Persian Gulf.
About
- The initiative has been launched by the Directorate General of Maritime Administration (DGMA) under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways.
- It provides 24×7 real-time tracking, monitoring and emergency support for Indian seafarers and vessels operating in high-risk regions.
- The eNavik Portal, launched on 1 July 2026, enables digital reporting of emergencies, grievance redressal and real-time monitoring of incidents.
- The government has also issued safety advisories, strengthened evacuation measures and ensured that Indian seafarers are not deployed in conflict-affected areas without adequate safeguards and consent.
