Samudrayaan Submersible Trials Delayed
  • India’s ambitious Samudrayaan project — the country’s first manned deep-sea submersible mission — has faced scheduling delays as key syntactic foam components from France are yet to arrive. The foam, essential for buoyancy, must be installed before the next underwater trials, shifting major tests to mid-2025.
  • Samudrayaan is built to carry a three-member crew to depths of 6,000 metres, placing India among the select nations capable of extreme deep-ocean exploration. The mission is a key component of the Deep Ocean Mission, aimed at examining the seabed and studying mining prospects for valuable metals in international waters. Its titanium sphere is engineered to withstand enormous pressure and support scientific sampling of rocks and sediments from the ocean floor.
  • To prepare for the final deep-sea descent, the National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT) has developed a full-scale steel replica to act as a testing simulator. This model has already completed trials at 100 metres depth. The next stage — a descent to 500 metres — was planned for December 2024 but has now been postponed. This upcoming trial is crucial before the actual titanium sphere undergoes high-pressure testing and certification.
  • The delay is primarily due to the late arrival of syntactic foam cladding manufactured in France and currently undergoing tests in Norway. This foam is vital for providing buoyancy, ensuring the submersible returns safely to the surface after deep-sea operations. Once certified, it will be installed on both the steel simulator and the final titanium sphere. Officials expect delivery by the end of the year, enabling the 500-metre trial to take place by April 2025.
