• Russia has agreed to adopt the framework agreement to join the International Big Cat Alliance, becoming the 19th member of this India-led global initiative. The announcement coincided with President Vladimir Putin’s state visit to India, further strengthening cooperation on wildlife conservation and environmental protection.

• Headquartered in Delhi, the alliance focuses on protecting seven major big cat species—tiger, lion, leopard, snow leopard, cheetah, jaguar and puma. India is home to five of these species, giving it a central role in sharing conservation experience. Most of these animals are vulnerable or endangered, making coordinated global efforts essential.

• The alliance aims to include 95 “range countries” where these big cats naturally occur, spanning Asia, Africa and the Americas. Nations become members by signing the framework agreement and issuing a diplomatic note. India has already committed initial funding for the first five years to support joint programmes, capacity-building and technology-driven conservation measures.

• The idea for the alliance was first proposed in 2019 as part of India’s broader commitment to combat poaching and wildlife trafficking. It was formally launched in 2023 during the 50th anniversary of Project Tiger. During the first assembly in 2024, India’s environment minister was endorsed as president, reflecting strong regional support for India’s leadership in wildlife conservation.
