Why In News?
Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation from the Red Fort on 15 August 2026, marking India’s 80th Independence Day. In his speech, he outlined the government’s vision for a Viksit Bharat by 2047 and highlighted the need for faster reforms, self-reliance, technological development and greater participation of the youth.
Key Highlights
- Viksit Bharat 2047: PM Modi said India must aim to become a developed nation by 2047, when the country completes 100 years of independence.
- Aatmanirbhar Bharat: He stressed the importance of reducing dependence on other countries and strengthening domestic manufacturing and production under initiatives such as Make in India, Swadeshi and Vocal for Local.
- Semiconductor manufacturing: India has started production at three semiconductor plants, with more plants expected to become operational in the coming years.
- Critical minerals: The government is working to secure supplies of critical minerals through the National Critical Minerals Mission and the proposed Critical Minerals Corridor.
- Nuclear energy: India has set a target of achieving 100 GW of nuclear power capacity by 2047. Five new nuclear reactors are also targeted within the current decade.
- Energy security: PM Modi highlighted the expansion of solar energy, piped gas infrastructure and other alternative energy sources. Solar capacity has increased from around 2 GW in 2014 to 160 GW.
- PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana: Solar systems have been installed in 50 lakh homes, helping households reduce electricity costs and, in some cases, earn by selling surplus power.
- Railway electrification: India has achieved 100% electrification of its railway network, compared with around 30% before 2014.
- Hydrogen-powered train: India has entered the field of hydrogen-powered trains, with the country’s first such train beginning operations.
Focus on Youth and Innovation
The Prime Minister placed strong emphasis on the role of young people in building a developed India.
- India now has more than 2.5 lakh registered startups.
- An Innovation Fund of ₹1 lakh crore has been announced to support young innovators.
- The government plans to train 1 crore young people in AI skills within the next year.
- More than 10,000 Atal Tinkering Labs have been established to encourage innovation among school students.
- The bioeconomy has grown from around ₹60,000 crore before 2014 to ₹20 lakh crore.
Sports and 2036 Olympics
- PM Modi said India is preparing to host the 2036 Olympic Games and will focus on identifying young sporting talent.
- A nationwide talent-hunt programme for children aged 5–15 years will be undertaken to identify and train future athletes.
- India will also host the Commonwealth Games in 2030.
Nasha Mukt Bharat
- The Prime Minister called for a collective effort to tackle drug abuse among young people. A 100-week campaign for a drug-free India has been launched with the participation of volunteers, NGOs, social organisations and spiritual leaders.
Defence and Civil Security
- PM Modi highlighted the need for stronger defence capabilities and greater self-reliance in defence production.
- He announced plans to develop a modern civil defence network to prepare citizens for emerging threats and crises. He also highlighted the rise in India’s defence exports and the growing reach of Indian defence equipment in international markets.
Women’s Participation
- The Prime Minister highlighted the growing role of women in education, sports, aviation, defence, science and public life.
- He said the number of Lakhpati Didis has already crossed the target of 3 crore, and the government is now working towards creating 6 crore Lakhpati Didis.
- He also appealed to political parties to implement 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assemblies at the earliest.
Social Security and Welfare
- PM Modi said social security coverage has expanded significantly over the past decade.
- He stated that coverage has increased from around 25 crore people before 2014 to about 100 crore people.
- Under Ayushman Bharat, senior citizens aged 70 years and above are also eligible for free treatment cover of up to ₹5 lakh.
Census and Digital Participation
- The Prime Minister also urged young people to actively participate in the ongoing Census exercise. He highlighted the importance of accurate household information and encouraged families to carefully check their details while submitting information digitally.
Message for 2047
- PM Modi said India needs to change its work culture, thinking and pace of implementation to achieve the goals set for 2047. He called for continued reforms and cooperation among the Central Government, State Governments, industry, farmers and citizens.
- He concluded by calling for collective efforts to turn dreams into resolutions, resolutions into capabilities and capabilities into achievements, with the goal of building a Viksit Bharat by 2047.
