PM Modi Releases Commemorative Coin Honouring Rajendra Chola I

Event: On the occasion of Aadi Thiruvathirai in Tamil Nadu’s Ariyalur district, PM Narendra Modi released a commemorative coin marking the birth anniversary of Emperor Rajendra Chola I, one of India’s greatest rulers.

Location: Celebrations were held at Gangaikonda Cholapuram, home to the UNESCO-listed Gangaikonda Cholisvaram temple.

Maritime Milestone:

  • The event also marked 1,000 years of Rajendra Chola’s naval expedition, highlighting the Chola Empire’s maritime dominance and influence in Southeast Asia.
  • PM Modi described Rajendra Chola I as a ruler known for military strength, architectural brilliance, and cultural expansion.

  • Symbol of Honour: The commemorative coin is a tribute to India’s historical figures who shaped national identity and civilisational pride.
  • Message: PM Modi emphasized the importance of reviving historical memory and recognising unsung icons of Indian heritage.
  • Aadi Thiruvathirai Festival and Rituals:
  • Cultural Celebration: Aadi Thiruvathirai is a sacred Tamil festival honouring Lord Shiva, celebrated with devotional rituals and temple traditions.

PM Modi’s Participation:

  • Wore traditional Tamil attire (veshti, shirt, angavastram).
  • Received ‘poorna kumbham’ welcome.
  • Performed abhishekam to Lord Shiva using Ganga water from Varanasi.
  • Offered deeparadhana as Tamil Shaiva priests recited hymns.

Gangaikonda Cholapuram:

  • Architectural Heritage: Built by Rajendra Chola I, the temple mirrors the grandeur of the Brihadisvara Temple in Thanjavur.
  • Preservation: Recognised by UNESCO and maintained by the ASI, it is a living symbol of Chola artistry and Tamil Saiva devotion.
