• On August 15, 2025, during his 79th Independence Day address from the Red Fort, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the launch of a landmark national security initiative — ‘Mission Sudarshan Chakra’.
• The ambitious decade-long mission aims to secure India’s critical establishments through indigenous technology, marking a decisive step towards Aatmanirbhar Bharat in defence and strategic infrastructure protection.
• Unveiling the vision, PM Modi said, “Every citizen must feel protected,” stressing that the mission would be entirely research-driven and developed within India.
• The key objectives of the mission include establishing a multi-layered security framework, reducing dependence on foreign security systems, and integrating surveillance, cyber defence, and physical protection into one comprehensive shield. The initiative will focus on anticipating and preventing threats rather than merely reacting to them.
• Drawing inspiration from Indian culture, the Prime Minister cited the Mahabharata, where Lord Krishna shielded the sun to help Arjun defeat Jayadrath, and likened it to India’s need to shield its vital institutions from modern threats.
