• Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Gyan Bharatam portal during the International Conference on Gyan Bharatam in New Delhi.
• The initiative marks a significant step in preserving and digitising India’s manuscript heritage, considered the largest in the world.
• India is home to nearly one crore manuscripts written in about 80 languages, covering diverse fields such as philosophy, medicine, science, astronomy, architecture, and art. These manuscripts, spread across libraries, temples, monasteries, and private collections, reflect the intellectual and cultural depth of India’s civilisational legacy.
• The Gyan Bharatam portal will serve as a central digital repository, enabling scholars, researchers, and the public to access and study rare manuscripts in a systematic and secure manner. It will also facilitate translation, cataloguing, and knowledge-sharing to ensure that ancient wisdom is not only preserved but also made relevant to modern times.
• By launching this portal, the government aims to strengthen India’s position as a global hub of knowledge and cultural heritage while promoting research and innovation rooted in traditional wisdom.
