Why in News?
India observes Partition Horrors Remembrance Day (Vibhajan Vibhishika Smriti Diwas) on 14 August every year to remember the people who lost their lives, homes and livelihoods during the Partition of 1947.

- The day was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2021.
- It honours the victims and remembers the suffering of people who were displaced during Partition.
- The Partition of British India in 1947 led to the creation of India and Pakistan and triggered a massive migration across the newly drawn borders.
- August 14 was chosen as the day of remembrance as it falls on the eve of India's Independence Day.
- The observance also highlights the importance of peace, harmony, unity and brotherhood and reminds future generations of the human cost of communal violence and division.
