Why in News?
- Union Minister for Home Affairs and Cooperation Amit Shah inaugurated the new office of the National Urban Co-operative Finance and Development Corporation (NUCFDC) in Mumbai. The initiatives were launched under the ‘Sahakar Nav-Kranti’ programme to make the Urban Cooperative Banking (UCB) sector more modern, secure and competitive.
Key Initiatives
- Security Operations Centre (SOC): Launched to strengthen the cybersecurity of Urban Cooperative Banks.
- Sahakar CBS: A nationwide Core Banking Solution (CBS) and allied services were launched to provide shared digital banking infrastructure.
- First Six UCBs: Representatives of the first six Urban Cooperative Banks connected to Sahakar CBS were felicitated.
- NUCFDC–NFSU MoU: An MoU between NUCFDC and the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) was exchanged to strengthen cybersecurity, technological capabilities and institutional capacity.
- Operational Risk Management: A practical guide for UCBs, authored by former RBI Deputy General Manager G. P. Mistry, was released.
About NUCFDC
NUCFDC was launched on 2 March 2024 as an umbrella organisation for Urban Cooperative Banks. It aims to provide UCBs with:
- Shared technology platforms
- Core Banking Solutions
- Cybersecurity solutions
- Capacity-building support
- Operational support
- Shared services are expected to particularly benefit small and medium-sized UCBs by reducing the cost of adopting modern banking technology.

Static Fact
- Ministry of Cooperation: A new ministry formed in July 2021 as a separate ministry (formed out of the ministry of agriculture) to give an administrative, legal and policy framework for the cooperative sector. It's first and till date Union minister is Amit Shah.
