Why in News?
The National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT), under the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), has launched a National Technothon on 3 August 2026 to develop innovative technologies for the sustainable collection of deep-sea polymetallic nodules under India's Deep Ocean Mission.
About the National Technothon
- The National Technothon aims to develop indigenous, energy-efficient, environmentally responsible and economically viable technologies for collecting deep-sea polymetallic nodules.
- It invites participation from start-ups, industries, MSMEs, academic institutions, research organisations, innovators and multidisciplinary teams.
- The Technothon has two challenge categories: Impact-Less Nodule Collection System with Vertical Riser Transport and Impact-Less Nodule Collection System without Vertical Riser.
