• Eravikulam National Park (ENP) in Kerala supports the largest contiguous population in the state, with 841 animals, while Tamil Nadu’s key populations are found in Mukurthi National Park and Grass Hills National Park, both located near the Kerala border.
• Notably, about 90% of Kerala’s tahr population is concentrated in the Munnar landscape, emphasizing the ecological importance of this region. The comprehensive survey spanned 89 census blocks in Kerala and 182 in Tamil Nadu, confirming the species’ presence across 19 forest divisions in Kerala.
• Officials have called for greater inter-state cooperation to sustain and enhance protection efforts for this endangered mountain goat species.
