A team of researchers from Mizoram University has discovered a new species of rain snake named Smithophis leptofasciatus in the tropical montane forests of Mizoram, India.
About the Species:
- Scientific Name: Smithophis leptofasciatus
- Common Name: Narrow-banded rain snake
Etymology:
- leptofasciatus is derived from Greek and Latin, meaning “narrow-banded”, referring to its distinctive body markings.
Habitat and Features:
- Found in humid, shaded microhabitats near small forest streams at elevations of 900–1,200 meters.
Characterized by:
- Shiny black body
- Narrow, incomplete creamish-white or yellowish-lime transverse bands
Behavior:
- Semi-aquatic
- Nocturnal, active during the monsoon season
Significance:
- This is the fifth species in the Smithophis genus, all discovered in northeastern India and nearby regions.
- These snakes are known as “rain snakes” due to their preference for wet, rain-rich habitats near water sources.
