• Researchers have discovered a new orchid species, Gastrochilus pechei, in Vijoynagar, Arunachal Pradesh, expanding India’s documented orchid diversity.
• Belonging to the Gastrochilus genus, this orchid is known to flower during September and October, thriving in moist, evergreen rainforests, particularly on small trees along riverbanks.
• Until now, Gastrochilus pechei had only been recorded in Myanmar, making its presence in Arunachal Pradesh a significant botanical find.
• With this addition, the number of Gastrochilus species recorded in India rises to 23, of which 15 are found in Arunachal Pradesh alone. The state, often called the “Orchid State of India,” is home to nearly 60% of the country’s orchid varieties, underscoring its global importance in plant biodiversity.
• The Gastrochilus genus was first recorded in 1825 and consists of 77 species widely distributed across tropical, subtropical, and temperate Asia.
• These orchids are characterized by their short axillary inflorescence, vibrant flowers, distinct epichile at the front of the saccate hypochile, and two globose pollinia attached to a slender stipe.
• The discovery of Gastrochilus pechei not only highlights Arunachal Pradesh’s ecological richness but also reinforces the need for conservation of fragile rainforest habitats that support such rare and unique plant species.
