NASA has invited India to participate in its Moon Base programme, aimed at establishing a sustained human presence near the lunar South Pole. The invitation was discussed during the 9th India-US Civil Space Joint Working Group meeting held in Bengaluru.
About the Moon Base Programme
- NASA’s Moon Base programme aims to develop a sustained human presence near the Moon’s South Pole.
- The programme was formally launched in March 2026 and is planned as a two-phase initiative.
- It will involve robotic missions, lunar infrastructure and human missions over the coming decade.
- The lunar South Pole is considered important because of the presence of water ice in permanently shadowed regions.
- Water ice could potentially be used for scientific research, life-support systems and future resource utilisation.
- NASA is also working with private space companies to develop landers, rovers and other lunar infrastructure.
India-US Space Cooperation
- NISAR Mission: The first major joint Earth-observation satellite mission between NASA and ISRO.
- Axiom-4 Mission: Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla travelled to the International Space Station as part of the mission.
- Artemis Accords: India became a signatory in 2023, supporting cooperation in lunar exploration, scientific research and the peaceful use of space.
- TRUST Initiative: Launched by India and the US to strengthen cooperation in critical and emerging technologies, including space, AI, semiconductors, quantum technology and biotechnology.
Why is the Lunar South Pole Important?
- Water Ice: Permanently shadowed areas may contain deposits of water ice.
- Scientific Research: The region provides opportunities to study the Moon’s geology and environment.
- Future Exploration: Lunar resources could support longer-duration human missions.
- Strategic Location: Establishing infrastructure near the South Pole could support future lunar exploration and missions beyond the Moon.
Importance for India
- Strengthens ISRO-NASA Cooperation: India’s participation could deepen long-term cooperation in human and robotic space exploration.
- Boosts Space Technology: Collaboration can provide opportunities for developing advanced lunar technologies.
- Supports Human Spaceflight: Experience from international lunar missions can contribute to India’s growing human-spaceflight capabilities.
- Global Space Leadership: Participation would strengthen India’s position as a major partner in international lunar exploration.
- Scientific Benefits: Joint missions can expand research on lunar resources, geology and the space environment.
