• Madhya Pradesh wildlife authorities have announced plans to introduce a female cheetah to the Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary, marking a significant step in wildlife conservation and species reintroduction in the region.
• Located in northwestern Madhya Pradesh along the MP-Rajasthan border, the sanctuary falls within the Khathiar-Gir dry deciduous forests ecoregion.
• Declared a sanctuary in 1974, it covers 368 sq. km and is intersected by the Chambal River, dividing the area into two distinct parts.
• Recognized as an Important Bird and Biodiversity Area (IBA), the sanctuary is home to diverse flora and fauna and holds historical and archaeological significance, including sites such as Chaurasigarh, Chaturbhujnath Temple, Bhadkaji rock paintings, Hinglajgarh Fort, and Taxakeshwar Temple.
• The sanctuary’s terrain comprises hills, plateaus, and the catchment area of the Gandhi Sagar Dam, with vegetation dominated by Northern tropical dry deciduous and mixed deciduous forests, along with dry deciduous scrub. Key tree species include Khair, Salai, Kardhai, Dhawda, Tendu, and Palash. The wildlife population features Chinkara, Nilgai, Spotted Deer, Indian Leopard, Striped Hyena, Jackal, and other species.
• The upcoming introduction of a female cheetah is expected to enhance biodiversity and strengthen conservation initiatives within the sanctuary.
