- Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned from his post on Monday, submitting his resignation to the President of India. As per Article 67 of the Constitution, the Vice-President may resign by writing to the President.
- Dhankhar had assumed office in August 2022 and also served as Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. His resignation has triggered speculation about a possible new constitutional or political assignment. The Election Commission is expected to announce the schedule for electing the next Vice-President soon.
Process for Electing New Vice President
- The Election Commission will announce a schedule for an early vice‑presidential election in line with constitutional guidelines.
- Electoral college consists of both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha members (including nominated RS members) voting by single transferable vote, via secret ballot .
Eligibility: Indian citizen, ≥ 35 years old, qualified for Rajya Sabha membership, and holding no office of profit.
