• Italy has introduced the Michelangelo Dome, an advanced multi-domain defence architecture developed by defence giant Leonardo to counter modern threats such as missiles, drones, cyberattacks and space-based intrusions. Positioned as one of Europe’s most ambitious defence projects, the system aligns closely with NATO’s evolving security framework.

• The system was formally showcased in Rome in the presence of Defence Minister Guido Crosetto and senior military officials. It marks a major step in Leonardo’s strategy to specialise in next-generation capabilities including AI, satellite systems, drones and advanced digital infrastructure. The Dome is expected to play a central role in Italy’s future defence ecosystem and potentially support Europe’s collective security.

• Unlike traditional air defence systems, the Michelangelo Dome uses an advanced software layer that integrates data from national and international sensors, radars, satellites, naval assets and interceptors. Built on NATO standards, it ensures seamless cooperation between different countries’ defence equipment regardless of manufacturer.

• At its core, the Dome relies on predictive AI to analyse threats and guide defensive actions. It creates a unified operational picture by merging surveillance inputs from air, land, sea and space. Designed to detect and neutralise drones, rockets, cruise missiles and advanced technologies like hypersonic glide vehicles, the system has already undergone initial trials. Full operational deployment is expected by 2030.
