India’s Digital India Programme has evolved into a major digital transformation initiative integrating citizens into the digital economy.

Important Points:

● Digital India Programme was launched in July 2015 by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).

● BharatNet has connected over 2.15 lakh Gram Panchayats with optical fibre infrastructure.

● Optical fibre network expanded from 19.35 lakh route km in 2019 to 42.36 lakh route km in 2025.

● India achieved about 100 crore broadband subscriptions by November 2025.

● Data costs declined from about ₹269 per GB in 2014 to about ₹8–10 per GB in 2025–26.

● Aadhaar has issued more than 143 crore digital identities enabling Direct Benefit Transfers.

● UPI processes about 21.7 billion transactions monthly with transaction value around ₹28.33 lakh crore.

● DigiLocker has more than 62 crore registered users for digital document storage.

● The National Supercomputing Mission has deployed 38 supercomputers with combined capacity of about 44 Petaflops.

● Over 6.5 lakh Village Level Entrepreneurs operate Common Service Centres under Digital India.
