• India has taken a major step toward building a sovereign artificial intelligence ecosystem with the launch of the BharatGen Technology Foundation at IIT Bombay. The initiative aims to create a Large Language Model (LLM) designed specifically for India’s multilingual, multicultural environment—capturing regional accents, scripts and natural communication patterns.
• भारत ने अपनी संप्रभु आर्टिफ़िशियल इंटेलिजेंस प्रणाली विकसित करने की दिशा में बड़ा कदम उठाते हुए IIT बॉम्बे में BharatGen टेक्नोलॉजी फ़ाउंडेशन की शुरुआत की है। यह पहल एक ऐसे बड़े भाषा मॉडल (LLM) के निर्माण पर केंद्रित है, जो भारत की बहुभाषी और बहुसांस्कृतिक विविधता को—क्षेत्रीय उच्चारणों, लिपियों और संचार शैलियों सहित—सटीक रूप से प्रतिबिंबित कर सके।
• The foundation was formally registered at IIT Bombay’s Powai campus on 7 November 2025. This marks a transformative expansion of IIT Bombay’s role from a premier academic institution to a national-scale AI development hub. The objective is to build an indigenous model capable of understanding and generating content in more than 22 Indian languages, both in text and speech.
• फ़ाउंडेशन को 7 नवंबर 2025 को IIT बॉम्बे के पवई परिसर में आधिकारिक रूप से पंजीकृत किया गया। यह कदम IIT बॉम्बे की भूमिका को केवल शैक्षणिक क्षेत्र से आगे बढ़ाकर राष्ट्रीय स्तर पर एआई विकास केंद्र के रूप में स्थापित करता है। इसका लक्ष्य एक ऐसा स्वदेशी एआई मॉडल तैयार करना है, जो 22 से अधिक भारतीय भाषाओं को—पाठ और भाषण दोनों रूपों में—समझ और उत्पन्न कर सके।
• The initiative has received strong central government backing. The Department of Science and Technology has sanctioned ₹235 crore, while the Ministry of Electronics and IT has allocated ₹1,058 crore under the IndiaAI Mission. This support is intended to accelerate the journey from early research prototypes to fully deployable AI systems.
• इस पहल को केंद्र सरकार से मजबूत सहयोग मिला है। विज्ञान एवं प्रौद्योगिकी विभाग ने ₹235 करोड़ स्वीकृत किए हैं, जबकि इलेक्ट्रॉनिक्स और आईटी मंत्रालय ने IndiaAI मिशन के तहत ₹1,058 करोड़ का प्रावधान किया है। यह वित्तीय समर्थन शोध-आधारित मॉडलों से लेकर पूर्ण रूप से लागू किए जा सकने वाले एआई सिस्टम तक के विकास को तेज़ करने के उद्देश्य से प्रदान किया गया है।
• BharatGen is collaborating with a consortium of leading IITs and IIITs. The project aims to release lightweight “distilled versions” of its models so that startups, enterprises and researchers can integrate advanced AI without high computational costs. This strategy is expected to expand access, lower barriers to innovation and foster a broader AI ecosystem across the country.
