Theme of Independence Day 2026
- The national celebrations in 2026 focus on “Yuva Shakti for Viksit Bharat@2047”, highlighting the role of India's youth in achieving the vision of a developed India by 2047, the centenary year of independence.
- The focus includes areas such as technological advancement, innovation, green energy, self-reliance in defence and youth participation in nation-building.
- The year also marks 150 years of “Vande Mataram”, the national song that played an important role in inspiring people during India's freedom struggle.
Historical Significance of 15 August
- India attained independence at midnight between 14 and 15 August 1947 ending nearly two centuries of British colonial rule.
- The freedom movement witnessed the contributions and sacrifices of several leaders and revolutionaries including Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Subhas Chandra Bose and Bhagat Singh.
- The Indian Independence Act, 1947, passed by the British Parliament, provided the legal framework for the creation of the independent dominions of India and Pakistan.
- Following independence, Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first Prime Minister, began the tradition of addressing the nation and hoisting the national flag from the Red Fort in New Delhi.
How Independence Day Is Celebrated
- The main national ceremony is held at the Red Fort in New Delhi. The Prime Minister hoists the national flag and delivers an address to the nation, highlighting the country's achievements, challenges and future priorities.
- A 21-gun salute accompanies the national flag ceremony. Across India, government institutions, schools, colleges and local communities organise flag-hoisting ceremonies, parades, cultural programmes and patriotic events.
- Independence Day is also an occasion to remember the sacrifices made during the freedom struggle and reaffirm India's commitment to democracy, unity, sovereignty and national development.
