• The Indian Railways has successfully completed a 51.38 km broad-gauge railway line connecting Bairabi to Sairang in Mizoram.
• This new rail link brings connectivity closer to the state capital, Aizawl, marking a significant milestone in the central government’s mission to connect all northeastern capitals by rail.
• Before this project, Mizoram had minimal rail infrastructure, limited to a 1.5 km metre-gauge track linking Bairabi to Silchar in Assam.
• The new broad-gauge line was sanctioned in 2008–09, but progress was hampered due to tough hilly terrain, frequent landslides, harsh weather, and manpower challenges.
• The project includes 48 tunnels covering a total of 12.85 km and 142 bridges, completed at a cost of over ₹5,020 crore. Tragically, 18 lives were lost during construction, including during a major bridge collapse in 2023.
• The railway line will reduce the travel time between Aizawl and Silchar from around five hours by road to just 1.5 hours by train.
• It will bring down transportation costs and significantly improve access to Mizoram, boosting tourism, trade, and regional development.
• The project also reduces the state’s reliance on road and air transport.
• Importantly, the Sairang railhead is a key part of India’s Act East Policy, serving as a logistical channel for the transshipment of goods from the India-funded Sittwe Port in Myanmar.
• This enhances connectivity with Southeast Asian nations (ASEAN), reinforcing India's strategic, economic, and diplomatic influence in the region.
