Indian Coast Guard Launches Indigenous Pollution Control Vessel 'Samudra Prachet'
  • On 23rd July 2025, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) launched ‘Samudra Prachet’, an indigenously built Pollution Control Vessel (PCV) developed by Goa Shipyard Ltd (GSL) in Vasco, Goa.
  • This marks a major step in India’s effort to enhance maritime environmental protection and promote self-reliance in defence manufacturing.

1. Indigenous Shipbuilding & Strategic Importance:

  • Second and final vessel in the PCV series built under Make in India initiative.
  • Features 72% indigenous content, including materials and technology sourced from Indian industries.
  • Involvement of MSMEs and local suppliers has:
  • Boosted domestic capability.
  • Generated employment and technical skill development.
  • Aligned with the Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision to reduce dependence on foreign defence imports.

2. Technical Specifications:

  • Length: 114.5 metres
  • Breadth: 16.5 metres
  • Displacement: 4,170 tonnes
  • Crew Capacity: 14 officers + 115 sailors

Equipped with:

  • Two side-sweeping arms for oil spill collection while moving.
  • Advanced radar systems capable of detecting oil slicks within the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

Significance:

  • Enhances India’s oil spill response capacity and maritime environmental safety.
  • Supports the Coast Guard’s role in marine pollution control, especially in ecologically sensitive zones.
  • Represents India’s growing ability to design, build, and deploy specialized maritime assets.
