- India has formally identified 27 places and geographical features in Arunachal Pradesh by their standard Indian names on the official Survey of India map. The move comes amid China’s repeated attempts to rename places in Arunachal Pradesh.
About the Development
- The locations include strategically important areas such as Long Ju, Thag La and Jairampur.
- Long Ju was an early India-China flashpoint in 1959, while Thag La saw the fighting during the 1962 India-China War.
- Jairampur is an important logistics hub near the eastern border and Myanmar.
- China has released a list of new names for Indian places in 2017, 2021, and 2023.
- India has consistently rejected these Chinese naming attempts, stating that renaming places cannot alter Arunachal Pradesh’s status as an integral part of India.
