The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) has mapped India's first Telomere-to-Telomere (T2T) reference genome of pigeonpea (Arhar/Tur), using the variety 'Asha'.
About
- This is the first time a complete genetic map of pigeonpea has been built in India.
- The genome covers all 11 chromosomes and identifies 36,557 genes, making it the most detailed genetic blueprint of the crop so far.
- It will help scientists develop pigeonpea varieties that yield more, handle climate stress better, and offer improved nutrition.
- The breakthrough is expected to boost pulse research, raise farmer productivity, and support India's food and nutritional security.
