India’s auto industry lobby has assured that carmakers will continue to honour warranties even if older vehicles, not originally designed for higher ethanol blends, run on E20 fuel, according to a recent Reuters report. This reassurance comes as India pushes forward with its ethanol-blending programme to reduce dependence on crude oil imports and promote cleaner fuels.
What is E20 Fuel?
E20 fuel is a blend of 20% ethanol and 80% petrol. Ethanol, a renewable biofuel primarily sourced in India from sugarcane molasses, rice, maize, and other agricultural products, enhances the oxygen content in fuel. This results in more efficient combustion and reduced vehicular emissions.
India’s Ethanol Blending Journey:
- The Ethanol Blended Petrol (EBP) Programme was launched in 2003.
- India achieved 10% blending in 2021-22, 12.06% in 2022-23, and 14.06% in 2023-24.
- The country reached the ambitious 20% blending target (E20) in July 2025, five years ahead of its original 2030 deadline.
