- The Indian Air Force (IAF) has proposed the acquisition of 114 Rafale fighter jets under a ₹2 lakh crore ‘Made in India’ plan, in what could become one of the largest defence procurement deals in Indian history.
- The move is expected to significantly enhance IAF’s combat strength while giving a major push to domestic defence manufacturing.
- As part of the government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) initiative, over 60% of the aircraft components will be manufactured locally in collaboration between Dassault Aviation and Indian firms, including the Tata Group.
Procurement Process: Current Status
- The IAF has submitted a Statement of Case, now under review by the Ministry of Defence, including Defence Finance.
- The proposal will be examined by the Defence Procurement Board, headed by the Defence Secretary.
- The final approval rests with the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC).
- Only after these stages will formal tendering and contract negotiations begin.
- If cleared, this mega deal would not only strengthen India’s air superiority but also reinforce the country’s defence industrial ecosystem.
