- The Government of India has officially launched the Made in India Label Scheme, a strategic initiative to reinforce the reputation and authenticity of products manufactured within the country.
- Rolled out by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), this certification scheme aims to provide Indian-made products a stronger identity, assure consumers of product origin and quality, and support the growth of domestic manufacturing.
- The scheme is voluntary and designed to help manufacturers demonstrate that their products are substantially made or assembled in India. Each certified product will carry a distinctive label with a QR code and logo detailing manufacturing location, label validity, and product specifics.
- This measure will enable consumers to verify product authenticity digitally, building trust in “Made in India” goods both domestically and internationally.
- The government has allocated INR 995 crore over three years to ensure smooth rollout, including quality standards development, digital integration, and awareness campaigns.
- Collaboration with the Quality Council of India and the India Brand Equity Foundation ensures a robust regulatory and branding framework.
Objectives of the Scheme:
- Provide clear identity and origin to Indian products.
- Develop a systematic way to qualify and brand products manufactured in India.
- Support recognition of Indian-origin products in domestic and global markets.
- Strengthen competitive positioning by highlighting authenticity, quality, and differentiation from imports.
- Eligible manufacturers must comply with specific quality and production criteria set by regulatory bodies before receiving label certification. The scheme targets a wide array of sectors including MSMEs, entrepreneurs in agriculture, aquaculture, and allied fields, aiming to elevate India’s manufacturing stature and promote self-reliance under the broader Atmanirbhar Bharat vision.
- This bold initiative aligns with India’s ambition to become a SMART country — emphasizing sustainability, manufacturing capability, self-reliance, rating, and technology — and complements earlier efforts such as the Make in India campaign.
- The Made in India Label Scheme is expected to enhance consumer confidence, boost exports, and catalyze domestic industrial growth for years to come.
