• The government has approved four additional semiconductor manufacturing projects in Odisha, Punjab, and Andhra Pradesh under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM).
• ISM, launched in 2021 with a total financial outlay of ₹76,000 crore, is a specialized and independent business division under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) within the Digital India Corporation.
• It aims to establish a vibrant semiconductor and display ecosystem, positioning India as a global hub for electronics manufacturing and design.
• Endowed with full administrative and financial powers, ISM functions as the nodal agency for the efficient and coherent implementation of the Semicon India Programme, which supports semiconductor manufacturing, packaging, and design.
• The mission has an advisory board comprising leading global semiconductor experts.
• The Semicon India Programme includes four schemes: (1) Setting up of Semiconductor Fabs, (2) Setting up of Display Fabs, (3) Establishing Compound Semiconductors/Silicon Photonics/Sensors Fab and Semiconductor Assembly, Testing, Marking, and Packaging (ATMP)/OSAT facilities, and (4) the Design Linked Incentive (DLI) Scheme. The programme also promotes indigenous Intellectual Property (IP) generation and facilitates the Transfer of Technologies (ToT).
• The newly approved projects are expected to accelerate India’s capability in advanced electronics manufacturing and strengthen its position in the global semiconductor supply chain.
