• Senior diplomat Gourangalal Das, a 1999-batch officer of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS), has been appointed as India’s next Ambassador to South Korea.
• He is presently serving as Joint Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), where he heads the East Asia Division.
• Das brings with him extensive experience in diplomacy and strategic affairs, having handled key assignments in India’s foreign policy establishment. His appointment comes at a time when India and South Korea are expanding cooperation in diverse areas, including trade, technology, defense, and regional security.
• South Korea is among India’s key partners in East Asia, with bilateral relations anchored in the Special Strategic Partnership. The two nations share common interests in supply chain resilience, emerging technologies, infrastructure development, and maintaining peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific.
• With his new role, Das is expected to further enhance India-South Korea relations, promoting economic, cultural, and strategic cooperation.
