Global Fintech Fest 2026

Why in News?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Global Fintech Fest 2026 in Mumbai on 8 September 2026, highlighting India’s growing fintech ecosystem and the role of digital payments in financial inclusion.

Key Highlights

  • UPI was highlighted as a major driver of India’s fintech transformation.
  • More than 24 billion UPI transactions were recorded in August 2026.
  • UPI is now operational in 11 countries, with India pushing for greater integration with the payment systems of partner countries.
  • The government aims to expand fintech beyond digital payments to credit, insurance, savings, investments and pensions.
  • PM SVANidhi was highlighted as an example of fintech-enabled formal credit access for street vendors.
  • The PM said fintech can use digital transaction records to help small businesses that often struggle to obtain traditional bank loans.

Emerging Technologies in Fintech

The Prime Minister identified three technologies that could open new opportunities in financial services:

  • Agentic AI – AI systems capable of carrying out tasks with greater autonomy.
  • Tokenisation – converting financial or other assets into digital tokens for secure and efficient transactions.
  • Quantum Computing – has potential applications in areas such as financial modelling, optimisation and cybersecurity.

Four Priorities for the Fintech Sector

The Prime Minister called for collective efforts in four areas:

  1. Strong cybersecurity
  2. Ethical data protection standards
  3. A robust regulator–industry innovation ecosystem
  4. A Fintech Consumer Protection Index

UPI and Financial Inclusion

  • UPI has helped take digital payment services to people and places where traditional banking infrastructure had limited reach. Its expansion has also strengthened the digital economy and supported initiatives such as PM SVANidhi.
  • India is also seeking to connect UPI with payment systems in countries with significant Indian communities and strong trade links. This could reduce remittance costs and make cross-border money transfers faster.

India’s Fintech Vision

The next phase of India’s fintech growth is expected to focus on:

  • Wider access to formal credit
  • Digital insurance and pension services
  • Financial services for gig and informal workers
  • Support for micro and small businesses
  • Cross-border digital payments
  • Greater cybersecurity and consumer protection

Key Takeaway

Global Fintech Fest 2026 highlighted India’s transition from a digital-payment-led fintech ecosystem towards a broader financial system driven by UPI, AI, tokenisation, quantum technology, financial inclusion and secure digital services.
