- Ghana has partnered with India’s Arima Farms and the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research–Crops Research Institute (CSIR-CRI) in Fumesua near Kumasi to launch a climate-resilient wheat initiative.
Objective:
- The primary aim of this initiative is to reduce India’s dependence on wheat imports, which currently cross USD 400 million annually. It also seeks to promote sustainable farming and boost local wheat production in Ghana.
Highlights of the Program:
- This program introduces ‘Wheat Pride 999’, a drought- and heat-resistant, nutrient-enriched wheat variety developed by India’s Greenpride. It is being tested across six agro-ecological zones in Ghana.
Collaborative Effort:
- The initiative is the result of a two-year collaboration among CSIR-CRI, Arima Farms, and the Mexico-based International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT). Supported by the Indian High Commission, the initiative features 326 climate-resilient wheat germplasm lines aimed at strengthening food security and agricultural innovation.
