Why in News?
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has issued a draft notification to amend the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989 for phased rollout of Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communication systems in motor vehicles.
About V2V Communication
- A wireless technology letting vehicles exchange real-time data directly with each other speed, location, direction, braking, road hazards.
- Forms a key part of Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs).
- Works over short-to-medium range, extendable through multi-hop communication.
- Runs on technologies like DSRC (Dedicated Short-Range Communication), 4G/5G cellular networks, Wi-Fi and WiMAX.
- Unlike onboard sensors, it can warn drivers about hazards beyond direct line of sight.
- It doesn't replace ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems); it just adds an extra layer of awareness on top of it.
