Why in News?

The Bankers' Books Evidence Bill, 2026 has been passed by the Lok Sabha. The Bill seeks to replace the Bankers' Books Evidence Act, 1891 and recognise digital banking records as valid evidence in legal proceedings.

About

  • The Bill gives legal recognition to electronic and digital records of banks as evidence in courts, subject to certain conditions.
  • It ensures that digital records are admissible only if they are authentic, free from unauthorised changes and maintain data integrity.
  • The Bill continues to apply to banks, post office savings banks and money order offices.
  • It also empowers the Central Government to extend its provisions to other financial sector entities through a notification.
