• In a proud achievement, a mountaineer from Arunachal Pradesh has successfully climbed Mt Elbrus, the highest peak in Europe, located in southwest Russia.
• Rising to an elevation of 18,510 feet (5,642 meters), Mt Elbrus is part of the Caucasus Mountains and is also the tallest mountain in Russia.
• Formed over 2.5 million years ago due to the collision of the Arabian Plate with the Eurasian Plate, Mt Elbrus is an inactive volcano featuring two dormant volcanic domes.
• It is recognized as one of the Seven Summits of the world, representing the highest peaks of each continent.
• The region experiences harsh climatic conditions, with temperatures often dropping to -8°C even in summer. Mt Elbrus is also home to important glaciers such as the Bolshoi Azaou and Irik, which give rise to several Russian rivers including the Baksan, Malka, and Kuban.
