• The Indian Army will officially honour for the first time the soldiers who were martyred in Operation Pawan — India’s first major overseas military mission conducted in Sri Lanka between 1987 and 1990. The operation resulted in 1,171 personnel killed and more than 3,500 injured, making it one of the heaviest wartime losses in modern Indian military history.
• भारतीय सेना पहली बार ऑपरेशन पवन के दौरान शहीद हुए जवानों को आधिकारिक रूप से सम्मान देगी — यह भारत का स्वतंत्रता के बाद पहला बड़ा विदेशी सैन्य अभियान था, जिसे 1987 से 1990 के बीच श्रीलंका में अंजाम दिया गया। इस अभियान में 1,171 सैनिक शहीद और 3,500 से अधिक घायल हुए, जो आधुनिक भारतीय सैन्य इतिहास में सबसे अधिक युद्धकालीन हानियों में से एक था।
• Operation Pawan began in 1987 when the Indian Peace Keeping Force was deployed in Sri Lanka to reduce violence during the Tamil–Sinhala conflict. The objective was to disarm militant groups, including the LTTE, under the Indo–Sri Lanka Accord. However, the LTTE rejected the agreement, resulting in intense and prolonged combat in difficult forested terrain and urban zones.
• ऑपरेशन पवन 1987 में शुरू हुआ जब भारतीय शांति सेना को श्रीलंका में तमिल–सिंहल संघर्ष के दौरान बढ़ती हिंसा को रोकने के लिए तैनात किया गया। इसका उद्देश्य इंडो–श्रीलंका समझौते के तहत एलटीटीई सहित उग्रवादी संगठनों को निरस्त्र करना था। लेकिन एलटीटीई ने समझौते को अस्वीकार कर दिया, जिससे जंगलों और शहरी क्षेत्रों में लंबे समय तक भीषण लड़ाइयाँ जारी रहीं।
• The mission witnessed heavy casualties, with many soldiers losing their lives in ambushes, close-quarter battles and sudden attacks. Among the martyrs was Major Ramaswamy Parameswaran, who was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra for his extraordinary bravery during a fierce encounter on 25 November 1987.
• इस मिशन में भारी नुकसान हुआ, जहाँ कई सैनिक घात लगाकर किए गए हमलों, नज़दीकी लड़ाई और अचानक हुए हमलों में शहीद हुए। शहीदों में मेजर रामास्वामी परमेश्वरन भी शामिल थे, जिन्हें 25 नवंबर 1987 की जबरदस्त मुठभेड़ में असाधारण साहस दिखाने के लिए परम वीर चक्र से मरणोपरांत सम्मानित किया गया।
• Despite such sacrifices, India never previously observed an official remembrance day for Operation Pawan. For decades, veterans and families privately paid tribute at memorials without institutional recognition. In contrast, Sri Lanka has built an IPKF memorial in Colombo to acknowledge the role and sacrifices of the Indian Peace Keeping Force.
• इतनी बड़ी कुर्बानियों के बावजूद भारत में ऑपरेशन पवन के लिए कभी आधिकारिक स्मरण दिवस नहीं मनाया गया। पिछले कई दशकों तक पूर्व सैनिक और शहीदों के परिजन निजी तौर पर स्मारकों पर श्रद्धांजलि देते रहे, लेकिन संस्थागत स्तर पर कोई आयोजन नहीं हुआ। इसके विपरीत, श्रीलंका ने कोलंबो में भारतीय शांति सेना के सम्मान में आईपीकेएफ स्मारक बनाया है, जिससे उनके योगदान और बलिदान को मान्यता दी गई है।
