Why in News?
Akshay Urja Diwas (Renewable Energy Day) is observed every year on 20 August to promote awareness about renewable energy and encourage a shift away from conventional fossil fuels.
About Akshay Urja Diwas
- The day was first observed in 2004.
- It is observed on 20 August, the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.
- The day focuses on promoting clean and sustainable sources of energy such as solar, wind, hydropower, biomass and tidal energy.
- Renewable energy sources help reduce dependence on coal and petroleum and lower greenhouse gas emissions.
- India has set a target of achieving 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030.
Significance
Renewable energy can help India meet its growing energy demand while reducing pollution and supporting climate goals. However, challenges such as energy storage, transmission infrastructure, land requirements, technology dependence and delays in project approvals need to be addressed.
