Ahmedabad is set to make global sporting headlines in 2025 as it prepares to host three major international events—the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship, the Asian Aquatics Championship, and the AFC U-17 Asian Cup 2026 Qualifiers. This development reflects Gujarat’s emergence as a premier sporting destination backed by modern infrastructure and progressive sports policies.
The Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship, scheduled for August 24–30, 2025 at the Naranpura Sports Complex, will welcome 350 athletes from 29 countries, reinforcing India’s prominence in weightlifting. Following this, the Asian Aquatics Championship—expected between September and October 2025—will bring together swimmers, divers, and water polo teams from across Asia, including powerhouses like China, Japan, and Korea. Later in the year, the AFC U-17 Asian Cup 2026 Qualifiers will be staged at The Arena by TransStadia from November 22–30, 2025, with India competing alongside Iran, Chinese Taipei, and Lebanon.
Looking ahead, Gujarat has also secured hosting rights for several upcoming events, including the Asian Weightlifting Championship (2026), the Archery Asia Para Cup (2026), and the World Police and Fire Games (2029) across Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, and Ekta Nagar. Most notably, Ahmedabad will be the venue for the Commonwealth Games 2030, following India’s successful bid.
These milestones are supported by the Gujarat Sports Policy 2022–27, which emphasizes infrastructure development, high-performance training centers, and sports tourism. With venues like the Naranpura Sports Complex and TransStadia Arena, Ahmedabad is rapidly solidifying its reputation as an international sporting hub, capable of hosting multi-disciplinary world-class events.
