Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tributes to freedom fighter Pingali Venkayya on his 150th birth anniversary.
About
- Pingali Venkayya (1876–1963) was a freedom fighter, educationist, linguist and most famously the man who designed the original Indian National Flag.
- Born in Bhatlapenumarru, Andhra Pradesh, he came to be known popularly as "Jhanda Venkayya".
- In 1921, Mahatma Gandhi endorsed one of his flag designs at the Indian National Congress session held in Vijayawada.
- The Constituent Assembly went on to adopt the present National Flag on 22 July 1947. The Charkha made way for the Ashoka Chakra, though the tricolour design rooted in Venkayya's original concept stayed on.
